How Much Does a Website Cost in Malaysia? A 2026 Guide for Small Businesses

By Toppages
Ask three web designers in Malaysia what a business website costs and you may get three answers that are thousands of ringgit apart. One freelancer quotes a few hundred ringgit, an agency in KL quotes five figures, and a DIY builder promises you can do it yourself for the price of a few lunches.
All three can be honest, because they are not selling the same thing. This guide breaks down what goes into the price of a website in Malaysia, the costs that show up after launch, and the questions to ask before you sign anything.

Why your website matters more than ever in Malaysia

Most of your customers are already online, and most of them are on their phones. In the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) Internet Users Survey 2022, 92.7% of the population were Internet users, and 94.4% of those users went online on a smartphone.
So when someone hears about your bakery, workshop or clinic, the first thing they usually do is search for you on their phone. What they find there decides whether they WhatsApp you or move on to the next result.

What you are actually paying for

Every website quote is made up of the same building blocks, even when they are bundled together or left out entirely.

1. Design and build

This is the biggest single cost: planning the pages, designing the layout and building it so it works on phones, tablets and desktops. A simple business site usually needs Home, About, Products or Services, Blog and Contact pages.

2. Domain name

Your address online, such as yourbusiness.com.my or yourbusiness.com. GoDaddy's Malaysia guide puts domain registration at roughly RM30 to RM200 a year. It is a small cost, but make sure the domain is registered in your name, not the designer's.

3. Hosting and SSL security

Hosting is the server that keeps your site online. The SSL certificate gives you the padlock in the browser bar and the "https" in your address. GoDaddy's guide estimates hosting at RM200 to RM2,900 a year, depending on the provider and the level of service.

4. Maintenance

Websites need updates, backups, security fixes and someone to call when something breaks. GoDaddy's guide estimates RM50 to RM500 or more a month if you pay someone to do it. On a DIY or WordPress site, that someone is usually you.

5. Content

The words and photos on the site. Some packages include copywriting and product uploads. Others expect you to supply everything.

6. SEO

Search engine optimisation is what helps your site appear when people search for what you sell. Basic on-page SEO, such as clear page titles, headings and descriptions plus a fast and mobile-friendly site, should be part of any decent build. Ongoing SEO campaigns are a separate service and are often priced monthly.

Typical website price ranges in Malaysia

Published price guides vary widely. GoDaddy's Malaysia guide says a basic small business website can cost between RM500 and RM3,000 per year. It adds that professional, more advanced sites can run from RM2,200 to RM30,000 per engagement.
In broad terms, you are usually choosing between three routes:
  • DIY website builder: Lowest upfront cost, monthly or yearly subscription. You take on: design, setup, SEO settings and ongoing maintenance.
  • Freelancer or traditional agency: One-off design fee, often in the thousands. You take on: hosting, renewals and maintenance are often billed separately.
  • Managed website service: Setup fee plus one annual fee. You take on: mostly just your content: products, prices, photos and posts.

The hidden costs most SMEs only notice in year two

A one-off quote can look cheap until the renewals arrive. Watch for:
  • Hosting and SSL renewals that were "free for the first year".
  • Domain renewals at a higher price than the first-year promo.
  • Plugin or theme licences on WordPress sites that need paying every year.
  • Small edit charges, where changing a price or a photo means messaging the designer and waiting for an invoice.
  • Broken sites after updates, when nobody is responsible for maintenance and the contact form quietly stops working.
The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest website. Add up what you will pay over two to three years, not just on day one.

Questions to ask before you pay for a website

Before you choose a designer, agency or platform, ask:
  1. Who owns the domain? It should be registered to your business.
  2. What is included every year? Hosting, SSL, backups, security and support should be listed in writing.
  3. Can I update it myself? Can you add a product or change a price from your phone, without code?
  4. Is SEO built in? Check for page titles, meta descriptions, proper headings, mobile-friendly design and fast loading.
  5. How do customers contact me? For most Malaysian customers, a WhatsApp button and a simple enquiry form are essential.
  6. How long until launch? Get a clear timeline.
  7. What happens if I want more later? Ask about the cost of extra pages, extra email accounts or a second language (BM, English or Chinese).

Don't forget Google Maps and local search

For a local business, your website and your Google Business Profile work together. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence draws on things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.
Google also says that information in Business Profiles can come from crawled web content, including your official website. Keep your name, address, phone number and opening hours identical on your website and your Google profile. It helps customers and search engines trust that the details are correct.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic business website cost in Malaysia?

GoDaddy's Malaysia guide estimates a basic small business website at RM500 to RM3,000 per year, depending on whether you build it yourself or hire a designer. Always check whether hosting, domain, SSL and maintenance are included.

Is a one-off payment cheaper than an annual plan?

Not always. A one-off design fee usually covers only the build. Hosting, domain, SSL and maintenance are then billed separately every year. Compare the total cost over two to three years.

Can I use my existing domain?

With Toppages, yes. Your domain stays registered to you, and the new site is prepared before your domain is switched over, so your current site keeps running until the change.

Do I need technical skills to manage my website?

No. With a managed website, you update products, prices, photos and blog posts from a dashboard on your phone or computer. Hosting, security and maintenance are handled for you.
